In 1958 Little Rock, Arkansas, twelve-year-old Marlee is painfully shy until she meets Liz, the new girl at school who helps her find her voice. When Liz suddenly stops coming to school, Marlee discovers her friend was secretly passing as white during a time when schools were closed to avoid integration. Determined to save their friendship and stand up for what's right, Marlee must overcome her fears and join the fight against segregation in her divided city.
