Eleven-year-old Delphine and her two younger sisters travel from Brooklyn to Oakland, California, to spend the summer of 1968 with the mother who abandoned them. Their mother, Cecile, is distant and unwelcoming, sending the girls to a Black Panther-run community center for breakfast and the day. Over the course of one transformative summer, the sisters learn about revolution, family, and what it means to find their own voices in a turbulent time.
