How many continents are there? The answer depends on how you look at the world. Most schoolbooks say there are seven continents, but scientists and geographers can count anywhere from four to seven. The difference comes from how we group the land and what we consider a continent.
A continent is a large, continuous piece of land that is separated from other pieces by oceans or other major natural barriers. This is the simplest way to think about continents. It focuses on the shape and size of the land, not on its history or culture.
Some scientists use the earthâs tectonic plates or the type of crust that makes up the land to decide where one continent ends and another begins. Others look at history and culture. The sixâcontinent models come in two versions: one combines Europe and Asia into Eurasia, and the other combines North and South America into a single continent called America. Both give a total of six continents.
