In the northâwest corner of Spain, the autonomous community of Galicia experiences a climate that is both wet and sunny. Heavy rains and intense sunshine create a perfect environment for vegetation to grow rapidly. When the summer heat dries the soil, the dense plant life can ignite easily, turning a small spark into a large wildfire.
The year 2025 was the most devastating for Spain. Wildfires burned roughly 118,000 hectares of forest, an area comparable to the size of NewâŻYorkâŻCity. The damage was widespread, and the fires highlighted the urgent need for new prevention strategies.
A small village named Vincios illustrates how a community can respond. With a population of about 2,500, Vincios manages a land collective that owns 678 hectares of forest. The collectiveâs coordinator, JosĂ©âŻTaboada, 58, explains, âWe have lots of rain and strong sun, so vegetation grows quickly and itâs hard to control.â
The cornerstone of Vinciosâ plan is a rare breed of cow known as the Cachena. The Cachena is Spainâs smallest cow. It was once common in Galicia, but as people moved to cities and forests were converted into commercial plantations, the breed nearly vanished. By the 1980s, only a handful of Cachenas remained.
When the Cachenas stopped grazing, the forest became thick and dry. The combination of dense growth and hotter temperaturesâdriven by climate changeâmade fires more likely.
In 2017, a wildfire destroyed about 80âŻpercent of Vinciosâ forest. Taboada recalls the event: âIt was terrifying.â No one in Vincios died, but two people in a nearby village lost their lives. The tragedy prompted the community to seek a new approach.
The new strategy began in 2023. The community purchased goats, sheep, horses, and additional Cachenas. These animals eat the dry plants that would otherwise fuel a fire. Their grazing also creates gaps in the vegetation, which can interrupt the spread of flames.
Today, the collective grazes 27 Cachenas, 60 goats, and 26 sheep. Since the animals started grazing, there have been no serious fires. In 2025, a barbecue in a prohibited area sparked a small fire, but it did not spread. The community hopes that more time will demonstrate the effectiveness of grazing.
The practice of allowing animals to eat dry vegetation is called silvopastoralism. It is gaining popularity in Spain and other countries as a method to reduce fire intensity and ease control.
Wildfires are a growing problem in Europe, the worldâs fastestâwarming continent. Since the beginning of 2026, the European Union has recorded more than 1,600 fires larger than 30 hectares. These fires burned over 580,000 hectares of land and caused âŹ2.5âŻbillion in damage.
âWe are now entering the fifth heat wave in Europe this year alone, and this year seems to be worse in terms of the intensity of that drought period,â says StefanâŻDoerr, a professor of wildland fire science at Swansea University. âThis intensity turns vegetation into fuel.â
Doerr explains that goats, cows, and other large herbivores can consume fine fuels such as grasses and shrubs. These fuels are the most common way that fires start. Removing them with animals is easier than doing it by hand.
Studies support the idea that grazing helps. In Sardinia, Italy, grazing removed 33âŻpercent of flammable vegetation and lowered fire severity by 15âŻtoâŻ68âŻpercent. In California, cattle grazing reduced the probability of a burn by 45âŻpercent.
Forestry groups say that grazing also brings other benefits. It can improve forest biodiversity, help trees stay healthy, and give local farmers a way to earn money without buying imported feed. A 2026 report by the European Agroforestry Federation said that forest grazing helps prevent wildfires, supports biodiversity, and provides livelihoods in rural areas.
In the United States, similar ideas are being tried. Marin County, California, has used sheep and goats since 2016 to reduce dangerous fuels on hundreds of acres of highârisk woodland.
âItâs a great way to use native methods,â says LeilaâŻTarabein, a research scholar at Pace University. âIt produces less pollution than machinery, but itâs something people might not think about as much.â
Tarabein also points to other U.S. examples. In Hawaii, grazing manages abandoned farm fields that could become fireârisk areas. In Utah, goats graze where herbicides and controlled burns are not possible. âThatâs why animal grazing has such an advantage,â she adds.
Goats are especially useful. They can move easily, are easy to transport, and can eat 3âŻtoâŻ4âŻpercent of their body weight each day. âRentâaâgoatâ programs, also called goatscaping, let people hire goats to clear brush, weeds, or invasive plants. These programs are popular for fire prevention and other maintenance.
Experts agree that a mix of animals is best. Different animals eat different plants. âItâs not only about the Cachena, you need a mix of animals because they eat different things,â says Taboada. ProfessorâŻDoerr adds, âWhat you really need is a mix of the right herbivores in the landscapeâsheep, cows, and horses.â
There are challenges. It is hard to make animals graze only in the places that need it. Overgrazing can happen, or animals can graze in areas that are not at risk. Fencing, virtual fencing, or herding can help, but they require time and effort.
Humanâanimal conflicts can also occur. In Austria, hikers have been trampled by cows. âIt is unusual, but it happens,â says Doerr.
Some critics say that adding more livestock increases carbon emissions and uses water, especially during droughts. Doerr says that in the face of deadly wildfires, action is needed. âItâs a tradeâoff,â he says.
Back in Vincios, Taboada is confident. The community has planted chestnut trees, which burn less easily, as a defensive barrier. They also installed 20 beehives to support local biodiversity.
In the next few years, the community hopes to quadruple the number of grazing animals. âThis is just the beginning,â says Taboada. âWe donât look back, only forward.â
The goatâcow experiment in Vincios shows that animals can be a powerful tool against wildfires. By eating dry plants and creating gaps, they reduce the fuel that fires need. While more research is needed, the early results are promising. The communityâs plan is a hopeful example of how people can use nature to protect their homes and forests.
The success of grazing depends on careful management. Overgrazing, human conflict, and environmental concerns must be addressed. Yet the benefitsâlower fire risk, healthier forests, and support for local farmersâmake it a strategy worth exploring.
As wildfires become more common, communities around the world can learn from Vincios. By combining grazing with other fireâcontrol methods, they can build a stronger defense against the flames that threaten homes, wildlife, and livelihoods.
