AI giant Anthropic plans to list on US stock market

The artificial intelligence company Anthropic announced that it plans to become a public company in the United States. This move will allow everyday investors to buy and trade shares of the firm on the stock market. Anthropic stated that it had filed confidential paperwork with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This filing is the first step in an initial public offering, commonly known as an IPO, which the company intends to complete this year.
Anthropic is best known for creating Claude, a popular chatbot that uses large language models to answer questions and perform tasks. Once the company goes public, the price of its shares and the total number of shares available to the public will be determined. These specific numbers have not yet been set. The decision to go public comes at a time when interest in artificial intelligence is at an all-time high.
Anthropic’s plans, along with similar moves by Elon Musk’s space company SpaceX, will likely serve as a test for the stock market. Investors will watch closely to see if their appetite for buying stock matches the extremely high valuations placed on AI companies. Valuation refers to the estimated total worth of a company.
Anthropic was founded only five years ago. The company was established by chief executive Dario Amodei and a small group of other executives. Recently, the company raised a large amount of money from private investors. This funding valued Anthropic at more than $965 billion. This valuation is based on assumptions about the company’s future growth. Despite being based on future expectations, this number put Anthropic ahead of its main rival, OpenAI. At the time, private investors valued OpenAI at approximately $852 billion.
